Salmon potential in the Aire

For many years the existence of salmon in the lower Aire was contested by the Environment Agency. We couldn't really afford the same mistake again. Over five years, observers spent considerable time at Newlay Weir. This paid off with photos of salmon leaping at the weir. Once photographs had been taken of salmon at Newlay Weir it was obvious that the fish were in the river above Leeds and were wanting to ascend the river to good spawning areas.

In the right conditions they sometimes get up

The Environment Agency and other organisations gather data and evidence on water quality. Under Water Framework Directive work they have assessed the quality of rivers and streams on the Aire. You can find out more about your local water course at Catchment Data Explorer.
