Farewell to DNAire Walk: Section 2, Afternoon, Bingley - Keighley

September 30, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Free

Friday 30th of September 2022 marks the completion date of our DNAire fish passage project and Sam Riley-Gunn last day with the Trust.

To mark the end of the project we are going on a walk to migrate our salmon mascot up the section of river we have reconnected with the fish passes, installed as part of the DNAire project. The walk will visit the major work sites that Aire Rivers Trust volunteers have worked on, to enhance the breeding potential of the river for fish and other wildlife.

The route will begin in Baildon at our wildflower flood meadow and finish in Keighley at Postmans Walk. Participants can choose to complete the entire days walk 20km (12.5miles)  or join us for half a day to complete a 10km (6.2 mile) section of the Walk:

Section 1: Baildon - Bingley 9am - 12:30pm

A gentle walk meeting at Baildon Train Station, which follows the riverside path from Buck Lane, through DENSO Marston Nature Reserve to Baildon Bridge. Then taking the Aire Sculpture Trial to Saltaire, visiting our uppermost fish pass at Roberts Park. Continuing on to Dowley Gap, Hirst Woods, Bradford and Bingley Sports Ground, Beckfoot and finishing in Mrtyle Park - Bingley.  The walk contains very few stiles and occasional sets of steps, the paths are well made. Participants can return to Baildon via Bus or Train from Bingley Train Station.

Section 2:  Bingley - Keighley 1pm -4:30pm

A more challenging walk from Myrtle Park meeting at the Aire Rivers Trust interpretation board by the Jubilee Bridge. Following the riverside path to Ireland Bridge then departing from the River Aire to visit the 5 rise locks and our hedging site. Then following the canal to East Riddlesden Hall and onto Stockbridge. The route then passes Aireworth Grove and follows the River Worth into Keighley and branches off to follow North Beck past Morrisons to Postman's Walk. The route contains some less well made paths and contains some short climbs. Participants can return to Bingley or Baildon via Train or Bus from Keighley stations.

We hope to see as many of you on your local section of river as possible to capture some photographs and memories of the last few years working on the river.

Please wear walking boots with high grip soles and ankle support and bring  a ruck sack with waterproofs, hat, a packed lunch and any medication you need to stay healthy.

Public travel expenses can be re-claimed from the trust.

Please sign up to the afternoon Section 2 (Bingley - Keighley) of the Walk by clicking the RSVP button below. If completing the full walk please also RSVP to the event for the morning Section 1 on our Events Page.

We ask all new volunteers to register with us first before signing up for an event.
