Formerly Head of Safety, Health and Environment for Yorkshire Water he spent 26 years working in the water industry, initially as a Pollution Prevention Officer responsible for the Upper and Middle Aire and ultimately having responsibility for all of the science and quality regulation for the company. He has filled bottles with sewage (and worse!), waded up to his thighs in pig slurry and stayed up all night taking dissolved oxygen samples from the river at Calverley (before the days of continuous monitors).
He trained initially as an analytical chemist, then specialised in sewage science before moving into the management/leadership arena where, amongst other things, he led a team responsible for mitigating the effects on customers of the (in)famous 1995/6 drought.
He has been a governor of 5 schools (3 of which he chaired) and was until 2014 a Trustee of Artworks.
He has a Masters’ degree in Organisational Change and now runs his own boutique consultancy where he “helps people to shine more brightly”.
